Best tips in photography

Looking to buy a new lens for my camera?

I have a Canon Rebel xsi with the stock 18-55mm lens. I am pretty happy with it, but am looking for something (preferably under $400). I usually shoot … well, anything I can shoot. Landscapes, macros, people (if they let me!) but am looking for a great camera to shoot night shots, such as lightning and fireworks.

I was looking at the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens from Canon, but the online reviews (off of the best buy site) weren’t so good. I do use a tripod, so shaking isn’t a problem.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

First I have a Rebel XS, a cousin to your XSi. I also have the 18-55 but find it limited. Yes it’s fine in a room full of folks, kids, etc., but I wanted more.

I also have the Canon 75-300 and it’s a pretty good lens with excellent optics. Mine is a little stiff in the zoom and is also limited because it has no wide capability so it lives in my bag.

I am now settled on the Canon 28-200. Optics are excellent, very touch construction and ease of operation is great. It’s versatile because it’s wide with a pretty good reach – an excellent choice I think.

Above someone recommended the 18-200. That’s an excellent lens as well but more expensive than the 28. Mine is USM but has no IS because I don’t need it… that kept my price down.
It’s available for $300 at B&H. I got mine with a UV filter to protect the front element and so far I’m having a great time with this lens.
