Does a career in photojournalism sound like a good choice?

I have always loved writing and photography, and it seems that I have a knack for it. Does anyone know the employment rate for photojournalists, or the current wages? Any general information or tips would be helpful. I realize the labour is hard and its a very tough business, but I am a very “strong” woman. I am a grade 12 highschool student and am looking to start my career path.

This is a field where you have to give up a lot to follow your passions. The demand is not great, the pay is usually not high, and you’d better be willing and prepared to move to where you can find a job. That might mean to some, one single weekly newspaper town in North Dakota where you’ll have to supplement your income by working the night shift at 7-11. I don’t mean to discourage you – I think if that’s what you really want to do, you should go for it – just be aware of the price you might have to pay. You might think about adding a photography sideline to your repertoire, such as portraiture, until you establish yourself as a photojournalist.

Then he broug…

Before, during, and after the ceremony—indoors and out—this volume is brimming with advice for every aspect of the shoot, including selecting equipment and lighting, working with an assistant, properly archiving digital files, and selecting a beautiful heirloom-quality album design.

About to Die: How News Images Move the Public

$14.16

Due to its ability to freeze a moment in time, the photo is a uniquely powerful device for ordering and understanding the world. But when an image depicts complex, ambiguous, or controversial events-terrorist attacks, wars, political assassinations–its ability to influence perception can prove deeply unsettling. Are we really seeing the world “as it is” or is the image a fabrication or projection? How do a photo’s content and form shape a viewer’s impressions? What do such images contribute to historical memory? About to Die focuses on one emotionally charged category of news photograph–depictions of individuals who are facing imminent death–as a prism for addressing such vital questions. Tracking events as wide-ranging as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, and 9/11, Barbie Zelizer demonstrates that modes of journalistic depiction and the power of the image are immense cultural forces that are still far from understood. Through a survey of a century of photojournalism, including close analysis of over sixty photos, About to Die provides a framework and vocabulary for understanding the news imagery that so profoundly shapes our view of the world.
