The Art of Black and White Photography $19.95 Over the last few years, most books on photography have been focused on the new breed of cameras and how to master the digital imaging workflow. In The Art of Black and White Photography author and photographer Torsten Andreas Hoffmann takes a different approach, focusing on image composition and image capture, with an emphasis on the creative aspects of black and white photography rather than on the digital workflow. After introducing the ground rules of composition, Hoffmann illustrates their applications with his own stunning black and white images that cover various photographic genres, including architecture, street photography, portraiture, and surreal photography. Also discussed are the elements of a “photographic language”‘, which distinguishes creative photography from random shooting. Finally, you will learn valuable post-processing techniques, mostly using Photoshop, that emphasize the functions necessary for creating outstanding black and white images. This second edition has been updated to include Photoshop CS5, as well as brand new images, content, and a revised layout. |

The Art of Photography $19.95 This is an updated and newly revised edition of the classic book The Art of Photography (originally published in 1994), which has often been described as the most readable, understandable, and complete textbook on photography. With well over 100 beautiful photographic illustrations in both black-and-white and color, as well as numerous charts, graphs, and tables, this book presents the world of photography to beginner, intermediate, and advanced photographers seeking to make a personal statement through the medium of photography. Without talking down to anyone, or talking over anyone’s head, Barnbaum presents “how to” techniques for both traditional and digital approaches. Yet he goes well beyond the technical, as he delves deeply into the philosophical, expressive, and creative aspects of photography so often avoided in other books. Bruce Barnbaum is recognized as one of the world’s finest landscape and architectural photographers, and for decades has been considered one of the best instructors in the field of photography. Night Photography $34.95 Night photographers have one big thing in common: a true love of the dark. Rather than looking at night photography as an extension of daytime shooting with added complications, they embrace the unique challenges of nocturnal photography for the tremendous wealth of creative opportunities it offers. A Mennonite Woman’s Life: A Rare Look into the Life and Times of a Mennonite Farm Woman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania $11.95 From the Backcover Mennonite women, whose lives stretched from the closing years of the last century into the early decades of the current one, were, for the most part, sturdy homemakers, mothers, and farm wives. One of these women, Ruth Hershey of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, kept a box camera near her children, her homestead, her garden, and her drop-in company. It accompanied her on excursions to town, the ocean, and visits with friends. As this rare collection of photographs (recently discovered by her grandson, a professional photographer) shows, Mrs. Hershey recorded life with an unusually artistic flair. Ruth Hershey Hershey, about whom this book is written, was born in 1895 east of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She took photographs with a small box camera and developed the negatives and prints herself, without any training or intention of sharing her work beyond her family. Most of the photographs in this collection were taken between 1915 and 1940. Ruth Hershey died in 1990, while a resident at the Mennonite Home, west of Lancaster. About the Author Phyllis Pellman Good, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a book editor and editor of Festival Quarterly/, a magazine exploring the art, faith, and culture of Mennonite peoples. She is co-editor of the books Perils of Professionalism, co-writer with her husband, Merle, of 20 Most Asked Questions About the Amish and Mennonites, as well as Ideas for Families, and author of several well-known cookbooks. Together she and Merle are executive directors of The People’s Place, The Old Country Store, and several associated galleries and museums in Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Photography Editor and Printer Edwin P. Huddle, who selected and printed the photographs in this collection, recently celebrated his 20th year as a fine art photographer. Based in Lancaster, he works primarily in black-and-white |

Mattia Bonetti $55 The first comprehensive monograph on the limited-edition creations by Mattia Bonetti, a trailblazer bridging the gap between art and design. Highly beloved and collected by forward-looking tastemakers—Christian Lacroix, Philip Johnson, David Whitney, and Reed Krakoff, among others—Mattia Bonetti’s seductive designs have been accessible only to the privileged few, until now. Quirky, poetic, colorful, and exquisitely crafted, Bonetti’s works hover between function and quixotic form, evocative of history but not tied to any school of art or design. This volume collects Bonetti’s limited-edition furniture designs throughout his thirty-year career, through photography by Krakoff in residential interiors, galleries, and Bonetti’s workshop; revealing color sketches; and dramatic black-and-white portraits of Bonetti and his team of craftsmen. Comprehensive in scope, Mattia Bonetti shows for the first time the whimsical world of this highly acclaimed Swiss-born, Paris-based designer. Essays by Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Marie-Laure Jousset, and Jacques Grange, as well as a provocative conversation with Adrian Dannatt, further illuminate Bonetti’s playful synthesis of opposites and insightful use of naturalism and modernism across art and design. |

The Film Developing Cookbook $46.95 The Film Developing Cookbook is an up-to-date manual for modern film development techniques. While the original Darkroom Cookbook focused entirely on photographic chemicals and formulae, this book concentrates on films, their characteristics, and the developers each requires for maximum control of the resulting image. The Film Developing Cookbook specifically addresses the difficult subject of T-grain film development. It includes rarely found information on film development and the nature of film developers. The authors take bold and controversial stances on many widely accepted film developing dogmas. They tackle many of the widely accepted myths of film development. They reject the trend toward scientific evaluation’ of films and developers in favor of the photographer developing a personal aesthetic without relying exclusively on densitometry or H&D curves.
